What is your favourite word in Spanish?

The 18th June is the day of the Spanish language, and for the last couple of years this has been marked by speakers and students of Spanish choosing their favourite word.  Some people like words with positive meanings, like “solidaridad” and “amor” whilst others go for the sound of the word itself, like “meliflua” and “murciélago”.

My favourite Spanish word is “azul”.   It has a long, breathy sound like the wind.  It also happens to be one of my favourite colours.

Do you have a favourite word in Spanish?

  1. I love the word ‘cucuracha,’ (cockroach) although I don’t like the creature. How can such a lovely-sounding word apply to such a revolting specimen?

    • Would that be because of the song perhaps?

  2. El intringulis…………hidden secret ¬

tiene su intríngulis……………it’s not as easy as it looks !

  3. my favourite word is ayuntamiento – it sounds so much nicer than town hall!

  4. “Intringulis” is an interesting word – it would be good to try and weave it into a conversation! As for “ayuntamiento” I agree about the sound of the word, a bit like “izquierda” and “igriega”. However, “ayuntamiento” can have other associations which aren’t always so positive!

Another favourite word of mine is “antipático” – the opposite of “simpático” (nice), in other words “not nice”. A perfect description of some people, although any connection with the preceding paragraph is purely coincidental.

  5. For some reason I have always liked mariposa – OK, yes a beautiful animal (?). I think also it is interesting because it is so different from the word for butterfly in other languages.

  6. Go on then – what is butterfly in other languages?
