Making things out of mud

Strange how some distinctions exist in one language and not in others.  In Spanish “barro” is the same word for “mud” and “clay”.  This led to some misunderstandings amongst my English friends when my children used to bring home items made out of “mud” from their pottery class, as they would mistranslate into English quite happily.  They knew the word “mud” in English, as we lived in quite a muddy place at the time, but not the word “clay” – all very understandable – to them.
