boato

This is one of those words I have to look up again and again every time I see it.  Do you have words like that?  Words that just look odd and don’t relate to anything else in your head?  This one doesn’t have anything to do with boats or boas, but what the devil does it mean?  Now after the umpteenth time of looking it up I’m reminding myself that it means “pomp” and “ostentation”.  I had the same problem for years with the word for beetroot, which is “remolacha” (I still had to double-check it!).  I’ve never liked beetroot and I don’t like a lot of show either, so perhaps that the reason for the mental block.

  1. Don´t think I´ll ever have to use boato (but will try to remember it) and like you Jane I still never remember the spanish for beetroot. Unlike you I love it, even used to grow my own when I lived in Scotland – it is so good for you (or so they say). I love the baby ones in a jar. Yum, yum!
